Restaurant News:
- Sagra fans will be glad to hear that they have reopened on the east side at 11th and Waller. We hope the vegan menu is as good as or better than their old location!
- Moses Falafel will be introducing their falafel sandwiches to the throngs of students at UT via a food push cart. Located at Dean Keaton and Speedway, the cart will be open Mon-Fri from 11am to 3pm. Yay for another great vegan option on campus!
- Many Austinites have been disappointed to find the doors at Thai favorite Titaya’s shuttered. They are temporarily closed for renovations (hopefully to expand their seating!). Their Yelp page says they plan to re-open on March 1, 2013, but where that date came from, I have no idea. Fingers crossed that they re-open soon!

WWVBS and Vegan Nom Grand Opening

Written by

Austin’s participation in the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale yesterday was a huge success!  The word clearly got out, as there was a huge crowd at MonkeyWrench Books, and the baked goods were flying off the tables. Well surpassing anyone’s expectations, the grand total raised for Sunny Day Farms was $1,705.02!

In addition to the baked goods, everyone was super excited to try the tacos at brand spankin’ new taco truck, The Vegan Nom. The response was so overwhelming, that The Vegan Nom completely ran out of tacos by 2pm. Luckily, my husband and I anticipated the high demand for tacos, and stopped by around 9am to grab our taco breakfast. The menu did not disappoint, and at $2 a taco, we almost couldn’t resist ordering one of everything.

We love everything about this little taco truck, from its location, to its prices, hours, ingredients and menu. I can’t wait to see what they do with the little seating area around the corner, and they will also be a welcome addition at HOPE Farmer’s Market on Sundays. The Austin vegan scene just keeps getting better and better!

It’s Always Sunny in San Antonio

You may have already heard about the upcoming World Wide Vegan Bake Sale in Austin, which is bound to be the most bad-ass vegan bake sale of all time. In case you haven’t gotten the memo yet, check out Lazy Smurf’s blog post about the WWVBS. I guarantee that her post will get you excited about making AND eating vegan baked goods.

The proceeds for this event will be going to Sunny Day Farms Animal Sanctuary, located right outside of San Antonio, in La Coste, TX.

If you have ever been to Sunny Day, then you already know about the amazing work owner Brooke Chavez does and about the hundreds (maybe thousands) of farm animals she has rescued and given a second chance at life over the last 10 years.

Sunny Day is truly a magical place, both for the animals, and for the people who come to visit and volunteer with Brooke. Sadly, times have been tough on the farm, especially with the severe drought this year, which caused a big increase in the cost of feed. Despite the hardships, Brooke has recently taken on the task of rescuing and finding homes for 25 pygmy goats in Waco, TX. The goats are severely malnourished, in cramped quarters, and surrounded by the dead carcasses of others. I didn’t want to post any sad pictures of these goats, but just know that they definitely do not look like the happy rescued goat above.

In addition to the goat rescue and placement effort, Sunny Day will likely be receiving many unwanted rabbits that were given as Easter gifts in the upcoming months.

Needless to say, Sunny Day needs our help! Here are four ways you can contribute:
